“Fame is a mask that gnaws into the face.” John Updike’s observation hauntingly rings true when thinking about child stars who were ruthlessly killed off too early. To their own generation, child stars were not performers alone but came with coming-of-age, part of family night movie and after-school TV ritual.

Their existence was that of promise, of talent, and, as was supposed to be, of circumstances that deprived them of their potential. From premature illness to unimaginably cruel savagery, all such tragedies created a gap not only in Hollywood but in the hearts of all who believed they had known them. These are not Hollywood stories only these are remembering how quickly life could be so shattered, even under the spotlight.

In the telling of these lives, there is a sweet-sour blend of sorrow and regret. The stories which follow tell of their career high, their loss and tragedy, and what remains.

1. Judith Barsi – A Voice Silenced at 10

Judith Barsi’s voice of acting brought such legendary characters alive in The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven, but in life she was a phobic. During her peak success, the father became increasingly unstable. Her girlfriends recall she confided in them, “I’m afraid to go home. My daddy is not happy. My daddy is drunk every day, and I know he wants to kill my mother.”

Though the mother had threatened officials, the case was dismissed. Judith and her mother were murdered by her father in 1988, who went on to commit suicide afterwards. Her contribution posthumously is a sad reminder of lost talent.

In 1987, she had contracted misdiagnosed Crohn’s disease after falling sick from bacterial-contaminated well water.

She lived through two cardiac arrests due to congenital intestinal stenosis complicated by septic shock in February of 1988. She was 12 at the time. Her death also went a long way in fueling the creepy urban legend of the Poltergeist films, but her own life is one of professionalism and humor well ahead of her own years.
