Why Gen Z Feels the Future Slipping Away And How to Cope

They have been called the most connected generation in history, yet many of them feel profoundly disconnected from the promise of stability. For Gen Z, the path into adulthood is shadowed by economic strain, technological disruption, and a political landscape that inspires more frustration than faith. The latest Harvard Youth Poll, now in its 25th year, reveals a cohort grappling with a sense that the ground beneath them is shifting and not in their favor.

1. A Generation in Economic Limbo

The most striking finding from the poll is that 43% of young adults are struggling financially or living with only limited security. This is not despite a stable macroeconomic picture, but in many ways because the benefits of that stability have not reached them. High housing costs, inflation, and flat job prospects are shaping their daily lives. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell acknowledged in September that “kids coming out of college and younger people, minorities, are having a hard time finding jobs.” The data show these struggles cut across political and geographic lines, uniting young people in a shared sense of precarity.

2. AI as a Source of Anxiety

Yet to many in Generation Z, artificial intelligence represents not an agent of progress but an imminent threat. Fifty-nine percent believe AI will make it harder for them to find jobs, a number that outstrips their anxieties about immigration or outsourcing work. This echoes recent studies that indicate younger workers are far more likely than older workers to believe AI will reduce their long-term opportunities. That fear finds evidence in observable trends: entry-level positions within sectors such as software engineering and customer service diminish with increased AI adoption, though higher-level positions remain in their wake.

3. Political Disillusionment Runs Deep

Gen Z’s political frustration is not a simple matter of partisan preference. Fully 46% would prefer to see Democrats in control of Congress, but the poll depicts “deeply negative views of both parties.” President Trump’s rating in the poll is 29%, but the disaffection extends well beyond one figure. There’s a sense for many that politics is an arena in which no one’s really on their side-a view shared in a lot of the world as young voters drift toward anti-establishment candidates across the ideological spectrum.

4. The Erosion of Institutional Trust

Confidence in government, political parties, and mainstream media is low. Even institutions that fare better, such as colleges, are viewed with skepticism. Harvard’s researchers warn that this distrust is bleeding into the social fabric itself: young people avoid political conversations for fear of backlash, and few feel deeply connected to their communities. Earlier surveys in the same series found only a small minority reporting strong local ties-a pattern that appears to be hardening.

5. The Emotional Price of Political Turbulence

The American Psychological Association’s 2024 Stress in America survey found that 77% of adults view the future of the nation as a significant source of stress. For young people, political anxiety often plays out in lost sleep, strained relationships and compulsive news consumption. Experts like Brett Ford, PhD caution that politics can function like a chronic stress, eliciting a wide range of emotions, from outrage to despair. The 24/7 news cycle, combined with social media algorithms, amplify that effect, making it difficult to disengage.

6. Managing Economic and Political Stress

The structural issues are complicated, but there are steps for individuals to protect their well-being. Mental health professionals advise limiting exposure to distressing political content, especially from sources designed to provoke emotional reactions. Setting boundaries such as checking news only at specific times can help. For financial anxiety, taking inventory of income, expenses, and debts provides a clearer sense of control. Even small adjustments, like cutting discretionary spending or seeking free financial counseling, can reduce the sense of helplessness.

7. The Role of Positive Engagement

Reframing political engagement to focus on positive emotions such as admiration, compassion, and inspiration may spur action without a similar cost to well-being. Local, grass-roots projects related to voter registration or volunteer activities could help rebuild trust and social bonds. In polarized contexts, good physical and mental health is more closely associated with positive social ties, particularly among those whose values are similar.

8. Why This Matters for Parents and Educators

For those mentoring the young, it is essential to understand the interplay of economic insecurity, AI disruption, and political disillusionment. Conversations that validate these concerns while offering practical coping strategies can counter the narrative of inevitable decline.

Encouraging critical thinking about news sources, teaching financial literacy, and fostering respectful dialogue across differences are other ways to equip Gen Z to navigate uncertainty. The findings of the Harvard Youth Poll are sobering, but they also point to a generation that is clear-eyed about the challenges ahead. By pairing structural change with personal resilience strategies, space opens up to transform instability from a defining feature into one surmounted.
