1. Viola Davis’ Historic Call for Opportunity

When Viola Davis took home Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2015 for How to Get Away with Murder, she didn’t receive an award she was a pioneer as the first Black American woman ever to win the category. Her words echo so profoundly at the core of Hollywood’s diversity problem “The only thing that’s between women of color and everybody else is opportunity.

You can’t win an Emmy for roles that simply don’t exist.” Sitting among fellow actresses like Taraji P. Henson and Kerry Washington, crying in her seat, Davis made her moment a rallying cry for representation. It was a performance that resonated outside the ceremony, reminding the industry and television viewers what change truly sounds like.

When she received the 2021 Emmy for Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series for I May Destroy You, Michaela Coel skipped the customary thank-you speech and went straight to the middle. “Write the story that scares you. I dare you,” she dared other creatives.

She spoke about the power of the potential to cut through clamor and listen for truth in stillness, and ended with an inscription to “every single survivor of sexual assault.” In less than two minutes, Coel was bold, poetic, and unforgettable proof that brevity can be as effective as a long speech.

A gracious blend of modesty and confidence, it was delivered by an actress whose work has traversed the high-wire balance between restraint and gravity. The instant was instantly quotable, the reminder that even Hollywood royalty do not want to be left un-real.

As Melissa McCarthy took home the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award for Mike & Molly in 2011, she and the contestants-earning nominees sat down on stage as if they were contestants in a beauty pageant. Sofía Vergara and Rob Lowe made the announcement, and McCarthy was indeed crowned with a tiara and given an armful of roses.

She aced it with her delivery when she told us, “I’m from Plainfield, Ill., and I’m here, and it’s kind of amazing.” It was funny, real, and truthful all at the same time, the kind of line that just makes you want to root for the lady.
