It’s been 25 years since Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous first rolled into theaters, and the film’s mix of rock-and-roll grit and tender coming-of-age moments still resonates. For fans, it’s more than a movie it’s a time capsule of the early ’70s music scene and a launchpad for a cast that went on to remarkable careers.
More interesting, however, is the extent to which their careers have since transformed from that tour bus ride with Stillwater.

From sudden career shifts to ginormous personal successes, their careers have been as rich and complex as the characters they so infused with life. Here’s where the cast of Almost Famous is today, and how they got there.

1. Kate Hudson’s Jump from Penny Lane to Pop Culture Icon

Kate Hudson’s performance as Penny Lane was by no means a foregone conclusion she had initially auditioned for William’s sister Anita, then managed to persuade Crowe to allow her to try her hand at playing head of the Band Aid crew. “Four auditions and then at last he called me, and he said, ‘You wanna be Penny Lane?'” she explained to Entertainment Tonight. It was a choice that would alter her life as she took home a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nod.

Hudson’s fame skyrocketed in the rom-coms such as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but music was never stagnant. She explained to People that Crowe “blew the lid open for so much music for me” when they filmed on location. In 2024, she dropped her first album Glorious, a success that left fans crying on social media, “It was Penny Lane all along.” The actress has also found motherhood, with three children in her hands and still active as an actress and singer.

2. Patrick Fugit’s Steady Climb in Films and Television

Patrick Fugit was 16 when he signed on to play William Miller, wide-eyed young reporter at the center of Almost Famous. He told 7News he didn’t realize the film would become a classic “I was worried about not messing up my lines.”

Fugit has since appeared in a wide range of projects, guesting on Gone Girl, We Bought a Zoo, and Babylon. He’s made some TV appearances as well, including Outcast, Treadstone, and Love & Death. Outside of the screen, he sings with his folk rock band Mushman and has been dating actress Jennifer Del Rosario since 2019.

3. Billy Crudup’s Golden God to Emmy Winner

Billy Crudup’s performance as Russell Hammond down to the infamous “I am a golden god” scene secured him as a fixture in the popular consciousness. Even Crowe took it far enough to have rock legends Nancy Wilson and Peter Frampton instruct Crudup on how to play guitar, providing him with actual stage presence.

Post-Almost Famous, Crudup’s credits roll have included Big Fish, Watchmen, and The Good Shepherd. Crudup joined the cast of Apple TV’s The Morning Show in 2019 to critical notice alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Off screen, Crudup wed Naomi Watts in 2023 and has a child with actress Mary-Louise Parker.

4. Frances McDormand’s Ongoing Award-Winning Run

An Oscar-winning best actress already, before portraying William’s strict mother Elaine, Frances McDormand lent gravity to the part, which Crowe called one of the film’s “begrudging role models.”

Following Almost Famous, McDormand appears in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Nomadland, for which she received more Oscars. She was honored with a Tony and an Emmy for Olive Kitteridge. McDormand married director Joel Coen in 1984 and, continuing to work, raised their son Pedro.

Jason Lee, who appeared as Stillwater lead vocalist Jeff Bebe, based his character on Free and Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers, reporting nightly to the practice room to hone the rock-star swagger.

Lee’s post-Almost Famous filmography includes Vanilla Sky, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and voice work in The Incredibles. His most well-known television work was Earl Hickey in My Name Is Earl. Lee returned to television work in 2025 on The Residence. Lee has two children with wife Ceren Alkac and one child from a previous relationship.

Zooey Deschanel’s brief appearance as Anita Miller was one of her earliest, but it also played a part in her success in Elf, Yes Man, and 500 Days of Summer. Her longest sustained role to date has been Jessica Day in New Girl for seven seasons.

Apart from acting, Deschanel is part of musical duo She & Him. Aside from acting, she is also marrying in 2023 to Property Brothers actor Jonathan Scott and has two children with her past marriage.

7. Remembers Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Legacy

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s two-year stint as rock critic Lester Bangs was short but not short-forgotten. Crowe had already learned that Lester was “the other parent” to William, hence strengthening the emotional backbone of the movie.

Hoffman’s career post-Almost Famous included Capote, The Master, and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. His life was cut short in 2014 due to a drug overdose, leaving behind partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children. His legacy remains a testament to his immense talent.
