Suppose the cash in a pocket was thousands or millions? To coin collectors and history lovers, the history of rare currency is not only fascinating because of the coins value, but also because of the stories that the coins narrate. These are physical products of American history, many of them the result of special conditions or minting mistakes or intentional design, and thus render them the objects of numismatic love. Although a number of the great coins have long been locked up in the private collections of individuals or in museums, a considerable number of pieces of value are in circulation today.

With smuggled nickels and inexplicable mistakes on coins, every coin has a story that is both rare and crafted, mysterious and historical at the same time. This list points at seven of the most valuable American coins which can still be found in common life and the interesting stories behind them which makes them so desired.

1. 1913 Liberty Head Nickel

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is the so-called Holy Grail of American nickels and was never actually published by the U.S. Mint. There are only five specimens which are worth millions. One of them sold in 2022 at Bowers Stack’s auction at 4.2 million, and another PR66 attracted 4.56 million at auction. Minted in secret, probably by rogue workers, these coins bear the image of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a Roman numeral ()V on the reverse. Their illegal provenience and abnormally low number make them one of the most desired coins in U.S. numismatics. Condition has a significant influence on value, and even the lesser quality ones fetch seven-figure bids.

2. 1787 Fugio Cent

The Fugio cent, which was designed by Benjamin Franklin, is the first official circulation coin of the United States. Produced in only one year, of 398,577 pieces, it has a sundial beneath the sun, and the inscription “Fugio” or in Latin L, which means “I fly” to signify that time passes. The term Mind Your Business is found below and Franklin is in the spirit of entrepreneurship, whereas thirteen connected rings with the motto We Are One can be seen in the opposite direction. An example of one circulated fetched an auction price of $1,575 in January 2022, and the uncirculated examples have gone up to $3,500. It has a rich historical value and is scarce in mint, so it is an invaluable discovery amongst the collectors.

3. 1969-S Lincoln cent Doubled die Obverse

This is a dramatic minting mistake that can be easily seen without magnification, and has bold doubling on the date, LIBERty, and IN GOD We Trust. It is extremely rare and only approximately 100 authentic specimens are thought to exist. The fame of the coin increased when the Secret Service had seized the authentic specimens in 1970 believing they were counterfeits. An example of PCGS MS64RD brought 126,500 in 2008. Even circulated coins are capable of fetching up to $10,000. The issue of counterfeits is not completely eliminated, and hence specialists emphasize the fact that people should only purchase certified copies of these items through reputable sellers.

4. 1955 Double Die Lincoln Penny

An error in the process of production produced doubling that was noticeable on the obverse, particularly on the inscriptions. The error made it become one of the most popular U.S. error coins as thousands of them went into circulation before the error was discovered. Examples of high-grade can be sold at more than $80,000 and still, the more common ones can fetch thousands of dollars. It is prized by collectors due to its obvious doubling, and the legend of how much it sneaked by quality control giving it the combination of rarity and visual enjoyment.

5. 1983 Penny With No Mint Mark

By 1983 the U.S. Mint was completely switching to zinc-core pennies, though some small numbers were struck with striking errors. The most striking of them is the lack of a mint mark, with the philosophy of Philadelphia origin, and a “double die reverse” that resulted in a duplication of the image. The 7.7 billion pennies that were minted that year only doubled by approximately 5,000. Prices vary between 2000 and 7000 depending on the condition. A few more valuable copper-core, 1983 pennies: some of the unwanted remnants of the earlier blank, some actually weigh 3.11 grams, instead of the normal 2.5 grams.
