Black Performers Who Talk About Life Without God

When Black artists leave behind religion on stage, it can hardly pass off as a clean-cut belief update. It is likely to come in the form of craft talk, family talk, mental-health talk, or comedy refined into a tool for addressing subjects often left unspoken.

This is important since the cultural norm continues to take the reverse direction, namely that Black identity, respectability and churchgoing are still closely interwoven. But the general social scene is shifting; 21 percent of African Americans report themselves not to be religiously affiliated, and more of the younger adults. Candour from celebrities does not create that change, but it can help name and normalize it.

1. The creator of Morgan Freeman is a human being

Morgan Freeman has defined the concept of a creator as a construction of human beings to explain what they cannot explain yet, and locating meaning in the human heart instead of in one doctrine. That position is particularly exceptional in an industry that tends to reward spiritual confidence, despite Freeman having brought overtly religious characters to the screen. This conflict of roles and personal belief is an element of the point: performance is not confession. The anchor is reason and observation as he puts it.

2. Atheism as a creative prism of Donald Glover

Donald Glover is in publicly an atheist who has abandoned a religious background. In his work, particularly in Atlanta, issues of intention and fear are dealt with as a day-to-day weather and not so much a theological riddle to crack. The outcome is not to have no meaning but to reject its outsourcing. To those who are brought up in an atmosphere of moral purity expounded by the pulpit those tonal realities may come like a shock.

3. The comic audit of religion by Chris Rock

Chris Rock has on numerous occasions established himself as an atheist and through stand-up has questioned the social authority of the church and religion. In his comedy religion is frequently not privately consoled but publicly plumbed-up, like money, power, routine, inconsistency. The method is not relying on shock, it is relying on enumerate the expenses aloud. According to the framing of Rock, a moral life does not have to be sanctified.

4. The family fault line of Jerrod Carmichael

The secular identity of Jerrod Carmichael has had a second theme; what is it like when the non-belief of a person cohabits with the faith of a family. His writing has covered the tension of honesty in case belief is as belonging.Interest here is not debate-club atheism; it is personal closeness, anticipation, and the silent pressure to come back. The candour of Carmichael renders secularism intelligible as a relation, as well as an intellectual choice.

5. The emphasis of mind not doctrine of David Harewood

David Harewood has come out expressing his secular opinion and he has used his platform to preempt mental health. Treatment, language, community and everyday task of maintaining oneself are where meaning is found in that pairing, not in the divine intervention. It is a reminder that spiritual and psychological are made to contest when most individuals are in urgent need of practical assistance. The emphasis on what can be done is maintained in the public posture of Harewood.

6. Atheism of Paul Robeson associated with justice

Another model was the life of Paul Robeson: an avowed atheist, whose political and social engagement could not be separated by any commitments to the public. Where there is a bit of celebrity nonbelief as a matter of choice, secularism of Robeson sat next to organising, risk and consequence. The stereotype of religion as the sole guiding force behind morally brave Black public life continues to be made difficult by his legacy. It also demonstrates how faith can be re-placed into mass action.

7. Minimalistic horror, with no godlike explanations by Jordan Peele

The films that Jordan Peele does are usually spiral around fear, spectacle, and human vulnerability without resolving the same into religious elaboration. The terror is social; what is fearful is frequently machines, crowds, hunger and deprivation. That decision is important since horror has always been a retreat into religious mythology to make shortcuts towards evil and redemption. Peele does not take the focus off the human agency who makes a choice, who is a viewer, who is an averted gaze.

8. The secular argument of self-care by Wayne Brady

Speaking with prefiguration of wellbeing and day to day treatment of others, Wayne Brady has written about how he was raised in a religious environment and then entered the secular world of adulthood. That framing belongs to a larger trend: other figures in the public who renounce religion do not vacate it with no activity but with schedules, limits, therapy discourse, and have made community choices. Goodness, as told by Brady, is the behaviour not theological. Care is a practice and not a demonstration.

Through all these lives, rebellion is not a goal as such. It is strictness that art, morals, and aspiration could be possessed by identity without a god having to endorse it.

And in a society in which Black religiosity is de facto default, even such a simple sentence as, not religious, atheist, nonbeliever can make the space of other modes of being even greater.
