Most of Hollywood is built on visibility. We expect actors to keep showing up & filming to remind us that they’re still around, yet every so often, there are stars who step away from the cycle entirely. A few decide to leave while they’re still famous, while others gradually drift out of the industry to build a different life elsewhere. A lot of them are much happier for it. Here are eight Hollywood stars who walked away from fame and the things they decided to do instead.

1. Charlie Korsmo

Charlie Korsmo was someone who seemed like he was going to have a long acting career during the early 1990s. After all, he had appeared alongside Robin Williams in Hook and was also one of the stars in classics like What About Bob? & Dick Tracy. But then he vanished from the Hollywood scene almost overnight, and it was for one specific reason.

It turns out that he had decided to enroll at MIT and study physics before earning a law degree from Yale. Eventually, he joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, with his official profile at Case Western actually mentioning Korsmo’s previous Hollywood experience. He transitioned from being a child actor into legal scholarship & government work, then ultimately became a professor.

2. Michael Schoeffling

Anyone who watched Sixteen Candles in the 1980s probably remembers Jake Ryan, and it was thanks to Michael Schoeffling’s incredible performance that he became one of the most popular teen idols from that era. Yet he suddenly decided to stop acting one day. His last screen role was in the 1991 film Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken.

Apparently, Schoeffling decided to quit Hollywood and move to Pennsylvania, where he began building handcrafted furniture for a living. He even opened his own woodworking shop in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, and chose a private family life over continuing to play the Hollywood game.

3. Mara Wilson

You’ll struggle to find anyone who was around during the 1990s who doesn’t remember Mara Wilson. She appeared in many hit films, including Mrs. Doubtfire, Miracle on 34th Street, and Matilda, although she was very young when these films came out. But she decided when she was a teenager that acting wasn’t something she was interested in anymore.

According to an interview with Longreads editor Sari Botton, Wilson said that she felt disconnected from the industry by the time she became an adolescent. Instead, she preferred writing. Wilson went on to study at New York University and became an author of works, including her memoir, Where Am I Now?

4. Angus T. Jones

Angus T. Jones is another child actor who decided to call it quits very early in his career. He was one of the main actors in the sitcom Two and a Half Men, one of the highest-rated programs on American TV at the time, and it was a role that had him starring opposite Charlie Sheen. It turns out, though, that Jones supposedly disliked appearing on the show due to religious reasons.

He actually went on to publicly criticize the show, claiming it conflicted with his personal beliefs, and he also encouraged viewers to stop watching it. He stepped away from regular acting entirely once he finished his contractual obligations.

5. Bridget Fonda

Throughout the late 1980s & 1990s, Bridget Fonda built a strong film career for herself, regardless of her famous family. She appeared in movies like Single White Female and Point of No Return, as well as A Simple Plan. But she decided to stop acting entirely during the early 2000s.

Fonda married the composer Danny Elfman in 2003 and decided that she would focus on her family life instead of acting. In fact, photographers asked her in 2023 whether she was going to return to the screen, but she said she was happy living outside of the entertainment industry and had no plans to return.

6. Shelley Duvall

For decades, Shelley Duvall worked in films and appeared in Hollywood classics like The Shining, along with the television series Faerie Tale Theatre. Yet she had mostly stepped away from the entertainment industry by the early 2000s, choosing to move back to Texas to live with her partner, Dan Gilroy.

Duvall remained mostly out of the spotlight and rarely appeared in public interviews since deciding to leave. She did appear in the 2023 indie film, The Forest Hills. However, in 2024, Duvall sadly passed away at the age of 75, with The Forest Hills being her final film role.

7. Gene Hackman

Gene Hackman had one of the most respected careers in American film. However, he traded it all in after the 2004 comedy film Welcome to Mooseport due to concerns following a heart stress test. Doctors were worried that film production’s demanding schedules could cause him serious cardiac issues, so he decided to leave Hollywood behind.

Hackman chose to pursue writing, and he published several books, including Wake of the Perdido Star. He did mention that he enjoyed acting but was only interested in returning to the screen if he could do so from the comfort of his own home. He passed away in 2025 at the age of 95.

8. Grace Kelly

Most people were surprised when Grace Kelly announced that she would be retiring from acting at the tender age of 26. After all, she had already won an Academy Award for The Country Girl and appeared in Alfred Hitchcock films like Rear Window. But after she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, she became the Princess of Monaco and decided to leave Hollywood behind.

Kelly focused on her royal duties instead, and her final film role was as the narrator of the 1977 documentary film The Children of Theatre Street. She did a lot of charity work for young children and the arts. Kelly passed away in 1982 after suffering a medical episode while driving. She was 52.

The decision to leave Hollywood rarely looks the same from one person to the next. In some cases, people decided to trade the limelight for a university classroom or a family life, while in others, it was for a Mediterranean palace. But the one thing that these stories have in common is the decision to step away from an industry centered on constant attention. They decided to build a somewhat quieter life elsewhere instead.
