A misstep on the part of a celebrity which goes viral can be as memorable as the event itself. It is touching and received warmly at times. At other moments, it is fumbling or tardy or so disastrously done that it generates more backlash. Since it can be overdone when it comes to making apologies, these apologies demonstrate that even contrition on the part of the masses can take a wrong turn within no time.

Based on the high profile instances in the world of films, television, and social media, the following are some of the most infamous instances, in which uttering the words I am sorry was not received as intended.

1. Will Smith’s Oscars Slap Fallout

Will Smith gave a refined video answering questions regarding the incident after offering an apology to Chris Rock the next day after hitting him during the 2022 Academy Awards. Critics believed that the production of the video lost favor in sincerity and the production of the video was followed by the ban of 10 years on hosting events by the Academy which ensured that the countdown remained alive long after the event.

2. Kevin Hart’s Oscars Host Exit

In 2018 when homophobic language was found in old tweets of Kevin Hart, he initially resisted, calling this a distraction to the Oscars. He later resigned as host and made several apologies however, the long time taken in responding left many with questions of whether he would be ready to accept responsibility.

3. Mel Gibson’s Post-Arrest Statements

After a 2006 arrest and allegedly antisemitic comments, Mel Gibson made an apology and entered a treatment program to address his alcohol problems. As he was meeting with the leaders of the community, the apology could not close the chapter completely because of the repetition of the incident in interviews.

4. Hugh Grant’s Late-Night Confession

Hugh Grant got on a talk show after being caught red-handed in Los Angeles in 1995 to confess that he was guilty with no excuses. The apology itself was quite straightforward, but it turned into a scandal and publicity, dominating his movie promotion and remaining in the minds of the audience.

5. Shia LaBeouf’s Plagiarism Mea Culpa

In 2013, Shia LaBeouf caused another wave of apologies after his short film plagiarism scandal, including a skywritten apology message to the original author. During his hiatus performance art stunts left the border between sincerity and provocation unclear.

In 2015, a television discussion on diversity led to an apology by Matt Damon to producer Effie Brown about he had talked over her, and in 2017, Damon apologized after making controversial comments about misconduct. The two incidences were criticized on timing and the tone.

7. Liam Neeson’s Racially Charged Admission

In 2019, as he was promoting a film, Liam Neeson told a story about how he had longed to take violent revenge on a Black man following the assault of a friend. His subsequent apology accepted the wrong caused but the first exposure resulted in a great deal of denunciation.

8. John Travolta’s Oscars Name Flub

The name of Idina Menzel that was pronounced wrongly during her 2014 Oscars was immediately a viral moment. The explanation of Travolta on the last minute changes and a light hearted follow up with Menzel did not wipe out the awkwardness.

9. Jason Momoa’s Resurfaced Convention Clip

In 2017, a clip of Jason Momoa (10-11) joking about violent scenes resurfaced, and he apologized on social media, saying that this was not his values. The apology itself was damage control because the initial comment was made casually.

10. Ryan Reynolds’ Wedding Venue Regret

In 2020, Ryan Reynolds apologized after having got married in a plantation location, and subsequently redid the vows elsewhere and contributed to racial justice efforts. Although the initial decision was proactive on follow-up, the initial decision itself was an issue of discussion during interviews.

Russell Crowe apologized on late-night television, after being arrested in 2005, after hurling a phone at a hotel worker. The fast legal resolution did not stop making the story a headline of a tabloid.

In 2009, the profane outburst of Christian Bale on a film set resulted in a call in apology to crew and audience on the radio. He stressed on reconciliation but the audio of the leaked tape still spread.

In 2015, Benedict Cumberbatch apologized over the use of an offensive term in a television interview concerning diversity. The clip was later used as a warning of irresponsible language but he pointed out inclusion efforts.

In 2023, Stephen Amell opposed strikes using a criticism that led to retaliation by other union members. His apology afterwards and appearances on picket lines served to pacify but the slip was still a fresh subject of discussion among fans. These instances demonstrate that an apology to the masses goes beyond words, it is timing, tone and follow through. When one of those elements goes off course, it may be difficult to repair the harm.
